PS 889 is committed to providing all students with a strong foundation in reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
Our Core Literacy Program
Our core literacy program incorporates three research-based curricula to build strong foundational reading and writing skills for students in Pre-K through Grade 5.
Heggerty (Pre-K–2) : Through engaging daily lessons, Heggerty strengthens students’ phonological and phonemic awareness, helping them recognize, identify, and manipulate sounds in spoken language—essential skills for early reading success.
Fundations (K–2) : This systematic, multisensory phonics program develops students’ skills in decoding, spelling, and handwriting, laying the foundation for confident, accurate, and fluent reading.
HMH (K-5) : A comprehensive, research-based literacy program that develops students’ reading, writing, vocabulary, and comprehension skills through engaging, grade-level texts and integrated instruction. The program fosters critical thinking, strengthens literacy foundations, and helps students become confident, independent readers and writers.
Mathematics
At PS 889, we use Illustrative Mathematics (IM) as our core mathematics curriculum for students in Kindergarten through Grade 5. This research-based program promotes a deep understanding of mathematical concepts while strengthening problem-solving skills, critical thinking, and mathematical confidence.
Through engaging, hands-on lessons, students explore mathematical ideas, share their reasoning, and discover connections between concepts. IM encourages meaningful discussions, collaboration, and multiple approaches to solving problems, helping students develop both conceptual understanding and computational fluency. Students also learn to apply their mathematical knowledge to everyday situations, making math relevant and meaningful.
Our goal is to inspire confident, curious, and independent mathematicians who approach challenges with creativity, perseverance, and a strong foundation for future learning.
Social Studies
At PS 889, Social Studies brings the world into our classrooms, inspiring students to explore the past, understand the present, and become informed, engaged members of their communities. Through interactive lessons, rich literature, meaningful discussions, and hands-on activities, students investigate history, geography, economics, civics, citizenship, and government.
Our Social Studies instruction encourages students to think critically, ask thoughtful questions, and make connections between what they learn and their own lives, cultures, and experiences. By exploring diverse perspectives, traditions, and communities, students develop a deeper appreciation for the people and cultures that shape our world.
We use Passport to Social Studies, a curriculum developed by New York City educators specifically for NYC public school students. This inquiry-based program promotes curiosity, civic responsibility, cultural awareness, and a deeper understanding of our interconnected world.
Our goal is to nurture thoughtful, compassionate, and responsible global citizens who celebrate diversity, respect different perspectives, and recognize their ability to make a positive difference in their communities and beyond.
Science
We use Amplify Science, a research-based, phenomena-driven curriculum that inspires curiosity, discovery, and a love of scientific exploration. Through hands-on investigations, literacy-rich activities, and interactive digital tools, students explore real-world scientific questions while developing essential critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Amplify Science encourages students to think, read, write, and communicate like scientists. By asking questions, investigating phenomena, analyzing evidence, and sharing their findings, students build a deeper understanding of scientific concepts while learning to collaborate, reason, and support their ideas with evidence.
